In practicing mindfulness and presence we can easily come to feel a "poetic state of health" where our senses and perceptions become clearer, our energy has rhythm and potency, and we experience great clarity and a palpable sense of meaning in the flow of life. In the beginning of this year I'd like to offer a short course introducing mindfulness practices for experiencing this poetic state.

Sustained practice can be hard to establish on our own but a group can easily support one another to stay the course so that individually and collectively we can experience the fruits of regular mindfulness practice.

Each day we will meet in the morning for a period of sitting meditation of around 20 minutes followed by a mindfulness practice suggestion for the day and a brief discussion period, in total around 30-40 minutes. Our meditations will be guided to explore specific aspects of both mindfulness practice and the poetic state of health, dudring the course of the month.  The aim is to build a solid foundation for independent practice beyond the course.
  • In the first week we will look at how awareness of breath can lead us to experience groundedness, relaxation and ease. We'll explore practices for working with the breath in our daily life (using the breath anchor and focus ourselves or to work with anxiety and stress for example).
  • In the second week we will begin working with the body through sensing meditations and how simple sensing can bring spaciousness, detachment and openness. We'll also explore practices for experiencing more space and freedom in life and the challenges of sustaining our sensitivity over the day.
  • We will have a longer meeting of around two hours in the weekend after the second week so that we can review what we've learned so far and take more time to explore how the practices are going and where we are going next.
  • In the third and fourth week we will look at how to work with difficult emotions and states using an inquiry process rooted in our sensing and breathing practices. This will also introduce us to other aspects of the poetic state of health including acceptance, self-compassion and appreciation. We'll also learn to recognise and access other positive sensations and feelings that are characteristic of this poetic health.
  • Finally, we will meet again for around two hours to conclude our month of practice and look at how we can continue to integrate mindfulness into our lives.
